![]() The New Madrid Click: “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On” By Tobie Baker The New Madrid Click is rumbling in Oxford’s underground. For those in tune, you know the seismic shake to which I’m referring. If not, then allow me to introduce them. Ladies and gentlemen! Movers and shakers! Brewing in town all summer long, The New Madrid Click is a six-member concoction, which merged in June, to provide Oxford with a genre fracturing groove. The same type of shake up that a nearby fault line gave to 400 terrified residents of New Madrid, Missouri, back in the winter of 1811. “There’s a lot of good stuff in Oxford,” said guitarist Tom Queyja of the local music scene. “We just want to add our end of the spectrum to it.” Joining Queyja in the tremor are bassist Tony Caldwell, drummer Gordon Bradley, percussionist Eric Kelley, lyricist Steve Stein, and standing post over the wheels of steel is DJ Craig Montoya. Together they are making a credible contribution to the local music scene combining jazz, funk, hip-hop, reggae and other world beat elements with rock fusion tones. Their locally unique approach to style mirrors the music that has influenced the 20 some things of the group. While each attribute hip-hop as a common influence, much like any peer in their 20's, the New Madrid Click merges the beats, rhymes and life idea with a live jam band. And with an objective to bring people of different walks of life together to boogie, the band has fittingly tapped into the street philosophy of hip-hop. One down side is the band has yet to record any of the original tunes in their bag of tricks. Queyja said the band’s mantles have to shift so to speak, which means they need to polish their tunes a bit, before local residents can experience the recorded rumblings. Queyja hopes to have a few tracks of magnitude available on the MP3 link at SextantArmy.com by winter. Until then, The New Madrid Click is accessible only through live performances. They’ll provide Oxford with another all the way live tremendous roar Thursday at Two Stick. Go check it out! reprinted with permission |
