Posted December 10, 1999 - Since joining Blue Rodeo as their new multi-instrumentalist sideman Bob has been busy preparing for his new job. He hopes to return to the studio in the spring, touring permitting, to begin work on his new record.
Posted August 25, 1999 - Bob spent 3 days in New Orleans with Wilco's John Stirratt and a fun cast of players recording some of John's (most excellent) solo material. We can't reveal who else was there or what they were doing.
Bob flew to Norway in late April (for about a month) to produce the debut l.p. of Metropol recording artists - Bonkers. Seems they and their manager liked the self-produced Bob Egan record enough to hire Bob to produce Bonkers. According to Bob, the final mixes have a "Tom Petty type vibe." Upon hearing the rough mixes floating Bob Egan bassist Augie Joachim said "It sounds like Bob went to Norway and made a record." Hmmm... It will be released in October by Sony Norway.
While in Norway Bob also spent a day in the studio laying down pedal steel with Virgin recording artists Madrugada. "The album was mixed in NYC by John Agnello and the band, and I ended up on 6 cuts!" And this September the record, "Industrial Silence," went to number one in Norway the week it was released by selling 15,000 copies in one week. Bob will tour with Madrugada in November in Norway. "Love the band but not too crazy about the lack of sunlight during Norway's November." So if you live in the south and want Bob to work on your record in late November or December e-mail him immediately.
Bob did some local recording this summer - he recorded some twisted lap steel for 2 new releases by Fat Possum artists Super Chikan and the Neckbones. He also went into Sweet Tea Studios with Dennis Herring (produced the new Counting Crows record) for a little lap steel on Jars of Clays new record (platinum-selling Christian Rock).
Plans are afoot for Bob and Wilco's Ken J. Coomer to spend a couple days in Ken's home studio recording instrumental movie soundtrack stuff. Hmmm...
Oh, and be on the lookout for Neco Case's new record, "Furnace Room Lullaby" (I think). It is on Bloodshot. Bob plays on 3 tracks, a couple of which were done in Toronto with Ron Sexsmith on guitar.
